March, 2010 Networking Breakfast
Edward Johnson III and the BBB:
keeping an ethical business climate
BBBAt the March Networking Breakfast, Edward J. Johnson III, President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Metro DC, spoke about how his organization helps businesses and customers stay honest.

Since 1920, the BBB has promoted the highest ethical relationships between business and the public, They accomplish this through voluntary self-regulation, consumer and business education, and service rankings.

With online communication, businesses can be ruined or scams perpetuated like never before. Johnson explained to the 50 attendees that the BBB tries to counteract fraud and other schemes online. He said his work is enccouraging, since it strives to create a better climate for doing business..

CFMSJudy Walsh-Mellett and Wendy Shenk-Evans of Christian Family Montessori School, thanked CBN-PG for March's grant. The school will use the money for scholarships, they said. They are pictured with Grants Chairperson and meeting sponsor, Steve Kemp of SK Motors and CBN President Sean O'Brien.

February, 2010 Networking Breakfast
Fr. Kyle Ingels talks about vibrant
Catholic life on the UMD campus

Despite the perception that Catholic students leave their religion at home when they enter college, Father Kyle Ingels, (pictured,) Chaplain at the University of Maryland told the February CBN breakfast attendees, he has a very active Catholic population.

Students attend one of four Masses each weekend, are on waiting lists to attend retreats and flock to adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on weekday afternoons. Vocations and RCIA candidates are also more plentiful than in many parishes.

The down side is that neither the Archdiocese nor the University supports the Catholic Student Center. Fr. Kyle must raise funds he needs for retreats, utilities, and one part-time secretary.

DeMatha Catholic High School was this month's grant recipient. Their grant will be used to offset costs incurred when students do mission work in other areas and cities during semester breaks. Pictured are CBN-PG President Sean O'Brien, Dr. Daniel McMahon of DeMatha, CBN-PG Grants Co-Chair Steve Kemp, and DeMatha's Tony MacAulay.

Dick Hageman of Art at Work sponsored the meeting. He provides the oversized checks pictured on this page gratis and prints other signage for CBN-PG. He and his wife Vicky also produce all the signs and banners for the Preakness, a job that includes painting the logo on the lawn.
January, 2010 Networking Breakfast
New attendees help grow CBN-PG
An overflow crowd attended the January 29 CBN-PG Networking Breakfast, with many newcomers in attendance. The solid turn-outs over the past months can be credited to the diligence of members inviting guests and the guests themselves returning.

Tim O'BrienTim O'Brien, pictured at right, attorney and CPA, of Joseph, Greenwald and Laake in Greenbelt, explained changes in the tax laws. O'Brien warned that the estate tax, although presently expired, is likely to be restored retroactively this year and he also mentioned the homebuyer tax credit, bonus depreciation and net operating loss carrybacks, all tax benefits included in last year's economic stimulus bill.

St. Matthias School in Lanham was January's grant recipient. Pat Wilson, Principal and Vivian Mason, Administrative Assistant, accepted the check from Grants Co-Chair Steve Kemp and President Sean O'Brien. It will be used to purchase an electronic documents reader.

Jim Palmer and Diane Blair talked about the 12th Annual Awards Banquet and Auction which will be held on Tuesday, May 4 at the Marriott Greenbelt, Contact Jim for sponsorship opportunities or if you would like to volunteer to help and contact Diane if you have an auction item or service you would like to donate.

Steve Kemp and John KellyAt right, Steve Kemp of SK Motors is pictured listening to first-timer John Kelly of Inner-City Business Products, LLC. As meeting sponsor, Steve also was able to tell the assembly about SK Motors' unique financing, detailing, car search and parish and school partnership programs.

Fourth Annual CBN-PG Crab Feast

Approximately 160 people enjoyed good food, football and fellowship at the Fourth Annual CBN-PG Crab Feast, held at the Bowie Knights of Columbus on September 27, 2009. Charlie Kinney, a founding member of CBN-PG, was the winner of the 50-inch TV, which was the center of attention during the Redskins game at the event. Although the Redskins lost, it was a close game, and spirits in the room were enthusiastic.
